Sergeant David Tubbs was a cop at the Poho County police station. He was present when the Creeper came to the police station to hunt Trish and Darry Jenner in the first film. He never saw the Creeper until it came hunting for the Jenners at the police station before, so dismissed any of the local psychic Jezelle Gay Hartman of this monster being linked to all the missing cases. He managed to not get killed, or even injured, by the Creeper along with fellow officers. He appears again in Jeepers Creepers 3 aiding Dan Tashtego to hunt down the Creeper with his task force.
Jeepers Creepers[]
In the first film, he only appears in the final act at the Poho County police station when the Jenners show up after their encounter with the Creeper. He was first seen in the front desk answering dispatch calls and seems to be dealing with plenty of missing persons cases. Jezelle approaches the Jenners to tell them about the threat of the Creeper not being over. Tubbs was very unwelcoming to Jezelle as he thinks she is a crazy woman who thinks she is a psychic and demands she leaves them alone.
When the Creeper does show up, the power goes out, but luckily their emergency power turns on. He gets communications of the Creeper at the station and violently and graphically killing police officers and some inmates. He has trouble understanding and believing what he is hearing, thinking everything an officer on the other end of the walkie talkie is not making any sense. However, he continues to lead his police officers to chase after the Creeper/intruder. He tries to hide the Jenners and Jezelle in a holding room during the lockdown. Jezelle objects as she says her vision realizes that the Creeper finds the Jenners hiding in a room. Tubbs gets annoyed and threatens to lock her up, however, is interrupted and joins his squad to pursue the Creeper. While he still did not see the Creeper, he does witness in horror with the rest of the police squad, an officer having his heart ripped out through his chest.
He is last seen after the Creeper breaks into the interrogation room where the Jenners hid, he storms in with the SWAT team surrounding the Creeper. He is shocked as the Creeper is now uncloaked, opens his clawed hood, and yells out a powerful screech; questioning what he and everyone is looking at. The SWAT team, however, were dealing with a hostage situation as the Creeper captures and holds onto Darry and uses him as a shield. Because of this and after the Creeper refuses Trish's plea, the Creeper flies away through the windows and takes Darry away with him.
Jeepers Creepers 3[]
The third film takes place right after the first film but before the second film. Tubbs first appears as the film starts with after the Creeper's attack at the police station and right after Darry gets abducted. Tubbs, along with his police squad, investigate the Creeper's truck. They opened the back of the truck and, to their disgust and shock, discover piles of dead bodies. They also learn of this monster's intelligence as they discover the front of the truck has a police communicator, realizing it understand humans and has been listening to them to avoid getting caught by them.
Shockingly, they also learn of the truck being booby-trapped as an officer gets attacked by the back door's spikes that impales his arm. The exhaust pipe then shoots out a harpoon luckily not hurting anyone and shooting at a parked cop car and knocking over Dan Tashtego's hat, a friend and colleague of Tubbs, who just arrive at the scene. Tubbs fills in Tashtego of what happened and how Darry was abducted and takes him around the scene where the Creeper flew away. During the briefing, an officer tells them how the truck has been impounded. Tashtego gets very angry and runs back to his own truck.
Tubbs gets yelled at by Tashtego, telling him that the Creeper did these things before and that it destroyed the church in the first movie because it was trying to hide information that it didn't want the officers to know. Tubbs reasons that this is why they should dismantle the truck in impound but Tashtego yells at him that the truck will not make it to impound. While riding with Tashtego, Tubbs learns everything Tashtego knows about the Creeper, especially how it is a monster that eats parts of people to rebuild itself and it has done so before 23 years ago. After the Creeper takes back his truck as Tashtego predicted, Tubbs joins and aids Tashtego and his task force in hunting down the Creeper and destroy him once and for all.
Tubbs is along with Tashtego as they visit Gaylen Brandon. They notice her hand is hurt and ask her what is wrong. She explains to them how her son Kenny found the Creeper's hand the night before he died 23 years ago. He had kept it in the barn, but the horses wouldn't stay in the barn as long as it was there, and that her son seemed angry and shot the hand. Gaylen tells Tashtego that when you touch the hand, you see how the Creeper came to be. She shows them an overturned flowerpot that she had the hand trapped under. Tubbs witnesses as Tashtego touches the hand and it holds him back, putting him into a trance. Later, Tashtego is drinking some whiskey and telling Tubbs briefly about it and only saying about how the Creeper, not only centuries old, but is actually ancient. They get a lead about the Creeper's whereabouts to which Tashtego and task force are ready to roll but Tubbs initially protests as he is not in the right state to go. Tashtego, however, disputes claiming the Creeper needs to be stopped before it goes into hibernation because it will be gone for 23 years, Tashtego fearing that he will either be dead or too old to be able to stop the Creeper in its next cycle.
Tubbs and Tashtego proceed and pursue the Creeper and come across his truck. While Tashtego is driving, Tubbs is shooting, however, the bullets bounce off the Creepers truck, including the tires. The Creeper's truck then releases a weapon of its own, which is a bomb that rolls, actively follows and has a psychic ability to chase its target. Tubbs shoots at the bomb to blow it up and stop its pursuit of their vehicle. Tashtego attempts to warn his squad about the truck's bullet repellant but is too late as they show up and attempt to shoot it, killing the driver and shooter. While in shock, Tashtego car explodes by the Creeper's bomb. Tashtego looks at the Creeper and Tubbs tried to shoot it with his shotgun, but the Creeper throws its shuriken at the gun, disabling it. Tashtego then ordered Tubbs to get out of there. Tubbs hides as Tashtego gets on the truck, in an attempt to gun down the Creeper. Initially jammed, the Creepers jumps and flies at him, but Tashtego was able to moves the gun and unleashes all the ammo on the creature. Tubbs looks in the distance as the Creeper pounces on Tashtego, the Creeper getting up moments later and seeing Dan's face cleaved by the Creeper's axe, killing Dan. Tubbs witnesses as the Creeper walks away and telekinetically calling the axe off of Tashtego's face and back to him, with the Creeper not interested in pursuing Tubbs.
Tubbs is last seen driving away holding Tashtego's hat in defeat as they failed their mission. Tubbs ultimately survives and does not get injured or killed by the Creeper but takes great involvement in learning more about the Creeper and appears planning to continue to bring down the Creeper.
Personality[]
In the first film, Tubbs appears to act aggressively and annoyed towards Jezelle, refusing to believe any of her psychic claims. He was very skeptical about any of the stories that potentially had to do with the Creeper as he has not seen it yet. He also seemed very stressed in his first appearance due to the exhausting police work he was tasked with. It is likely because the missing persons cases have been continuing to occur as implied by the posters put up at the police station bulletin board. This also means he seems to very much care about helping people and saving lives. His whole worldview changes after seeing the Creeper for how inhuman it appears when it captured Darry.
His role is further expanded in Jeepers Creepers 3, as while initially arguing with Dan Tashtego's plan of how to pursue the Creeper, he helps him and gets moved when Tashtego tells him about how much damage was caused and lives of loved ones the Creeper has taken. Tubbs demonstrates he really cares about other people's lives and puts himself as much on the front line as Dan to pursue the Creeper.
Trivia[]
- Like Gina Philips, who played Trish Jenner, Tubb's actor, Brandon Smith reprised his role as Tubbs from the first film, both of them returning to their roles after 16 years. However, his role was extended as a main character while Trish only makes a cameo in the end.
- It is unknown if there are any surviving members of the Creeper hunting task force, it is likely, Tubbs will succeed Tashtego in leading them.
- Initially Jeepers Creeper 3 was supposed to set 23 years in the future from Jeepers Creepers 2, however since this plan was scrapped for this third film, Tubbs role was extended. It was unlikely Tubbs was supposed to have a role in the initial plans.
